William N. Cantrell became President of Peoples Gas in June 1997. Peoples Gas serves more than 330,000 customers in more than 30 counties around Florida, and it serves more than 3,000 megawatts of power generation throughout Florida. Cantrell also served as President of Tampa Electric from September 2003 to October 2004.

He joined Tampa Electric in 1975 and held engineering and management positions in several departments before being named vice president-Energy Supply at Tampa Electric in 1994 with responsibility for engineering, operations, maintenance and construction for the company's power production facilities, including environmental matters and fuel procurement.

Cantrell is very active in the natural gas industry, serving on the boards of the American Gas Association (AGA), Florida Natural Gas Association (FNGA) and Southern Gas Association (SGA). He will be the president of SGA in 2009.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and was inducted into the school’s Academy of Distinguished Engineering Alumni in 2005. He also has a master’s degree in business administration from The University of Tampa and is a long-time trustee of that university.

Cantrell is a registered professional engineer in Florida and is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Florida Engineering Society. He is a member of the 1991 Leadership Tampa class and a United Way Keel Club member.

He is married and has two grown children and one grandson.
