Thomas L. Hernandez was named vice president of Energy Supply of Tampa Electric in January 2006. He is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of 4,700 megawatts of generating capacity at four power plant sites. Hernandez also is responsible for generation planning, operations planning, engineering, construction, environmental planning and compliance, warehousing and combustion by-products management.
Hernandez was vice president of Energy Delivery and Customer Services for Tampa Electric since 2003 and vice president of Energy Delivery since 2001. He also served as vice president of Regulatory Affairs for TECO Energy in 1998. During his career with the company he has held a variety of positions in operations, engineering, planning, marketing, fuels and environmental.
He joined Tampa Electric in August 1982 as an associate engineer in the Production Department after graduating from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
In 2001, Florida Governor Jeb Bush appointed Hernandez to the Children's Board of Hillsborough County, where he served as the treasurer and chair of the board during two consecutive four-year terms. He serves on the board of the Florida Aquarium and is a past chair of the Resource Working Group and executive board member of the Florida Electric Power Coordination Group.
He has supported several youth activities, including soccer, football, dance and cheerleading.
Hernandez is married and has two sons and a daughter.
