Tom Hernandez joined Tampa Electric Company in 1982 as an associate engineer in the company's Production Department.
During his career with the company, Hernandez's responsibilities included engineering and management positions in Production and Generation Planning, before being named director of Energy & Market Planning in 1994. In 1998, Hernandez was named director of Fuels & Environmental Services and one month later, was promoted to vice president of Regulatory Affairs for TECO Energy.
Hernandez was named vice president of Energy Delivery for Tampa Electric in 2001. In 2003, he assumed the additional responsibilities of the Customer Services department. In 2006, he was named vice president of Energy Supply, responsible for the safe operation of 4,400 megawatts of generating capacity, generation planning, operations planning, environmental planning and compliance, purchasing and warehousing, and combustion byproducts management. In 2008, he assumed the additional responsibilities of the Engineering & Construction department.
Hernandez graduated from Louisiana State University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering.
He is past chairman of the Children's Board of Hillsborough County, where he served two consecutive four-year gubernatorial appointments.
Hernandez is married and has two sons and one daughter.
