TECO Energy's first international project was the Alborada Power Station, a 78 MW simple cycle facility in Escuintla, Guatemala, which began commercial operation in 1995.
Alborada Power Station provides power to Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala, S.A. (EEGSA), providing an economical and flexible source of power for Guatemala's long-term power requirements.
Alborada Power Station is owned by Tampa Centro Americana Electricidad, Limitada, a teaming of TECO Guatemala as the majority owner, and a prominent business group in Guatemala.
The project consists of two new state-of-the-art GE LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbines operating in simple cycle, fuled by distillate oil. The chiller system cools the gas turbine inlet air to achieve the gas turbine optimum inlet temperatures raising the total plant output from 65 MW to 78 MW at site ambient conditions.
The facility includes a 230 KV switchyard and 1.7 km of transmission line connecting the switchyard with EEGSA's substation. The facility design provides for expansion to combined-cycle for a total of 101 MW.
TECO Guatemala oversees all operations and maintenance for the facility.
