San José Power Station

J.H. Phillips Sebring StationThe San José Power Station is a 120-MW pulverized coal-fired power plant located near the town of Masagua, Guatemala. The plant site is located about 75 km south of Guatemala City near the Pacific coast. Also included in the project scope is a fuel receiving facility located at Puerto Quetzal.

Customers

San José is a base-load facility providing power to Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala, S.A. (EEGSA) under a 15-year power purchase agreement signed in November 1996.

Technology

The project consists of a steam turbine using a cooling tower for condenser fueling, a steam generator and a substation. Low NOx burners and a pulse jet fabric filter complement the low-sulphur coal selected as the fuel.

Construction and Implementation

The project was constructed under a contract with J.A. Jones Construction and and Black & Veatch International on a turn-key contract basis. The project also included port modifications to accommodate the importation of coal, as well as a transmission line to connect the plant to EEGSA's Alborada substation. The San José Power Station began commercial operation on Jan. 19, 2000.

Operations

TECO Guatemala operates and maintains the San José plant, and manages the fuel and day-to-day procurement for the facility. The company owns 100 percent of this project.
