TECO Energy secures naming rights for Fort Myers arena

TAMPA, August 30, 1999

TECO Energy has acquired the naming rights of an arena in Estero, Fla., near Fort Myers.

The arena is home to the Florida Everblades, a professional hockey team, and was completed in November 1998. Since then, the newly named TECO Arena has hosted Elton John, Bob Dylan, Champions on Ice, Stars on Ice, Disney on Ice, WWF Wrestling and numerous other events.

"TECO Energy is thrilled about this exciting opportunity to join forces with the Florida Everblades in support of the Southwest Florida community," said Peoples Gas President Bill Cantrell.

"Since beginning our natural gas expansion into Southwest Florida in April 1998, we have made significant strides in our efforts to become part of the community. This partnership is an important step forward," added Cantrell.

Craig Brush, president of the Florida Everblades, said, "TECO Energy is making strong ties in this marketplace and we are excited to be joining them in this venture. TECO Arena will continue to be the leader in sports and entertainment in Southwest Florida."

The Southwest Florida expansion via TECO Energy's Peoples Gas business has moved at an impressive pace since its inception.

Thanks to Peoples Gas' multi-million dollar capital investment in pipeline expansion, residents of Charlotte, Lee and Collier Counties have, for the first time, the opportunity to use natural gas service.

Expansion to these three fast-growing counties was a key business decision for TECO Energy. Southwest Florida is the fifth-fastest growing region in the nation and among the highest in per capita income.

In fact, TECO Energy’s engineering and energy service company, Bosek, Gibson and Associates, opened a business office in Fort Myers in 1992 and has since completed projects for a number of clients, including Charlotte County Public Schools, Lee Memorial Hospital and Edison Community College.

During arena construction, BGA completed design/build engineering of all electrical systems throughout the special event facility.

"TECO Arena is the next in an ongoing series of TECO Energy’s efforts to build a lasting relationship with Southwest Florida," said Cantrell.

"This sponsorship is an excellent fit for our companies, and it demonstrates clearly that we plan to be in the area for the long term," added Cantrell.
