A tradition of leadership and career development: John Ramil – from co-op student to CEO and community leader

John Ramil's path to president and chief executive officer of TECO Energy is characteristic of the growth opportunities that emphasize leadership development. Ramil began his career at Tampa Electric in March 1976 as a cooperative-education student while attending the University of South Florida (USF), where he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Engineering. He has had the opportunity to work in a variety of positions in the company's engineering, operations, marketing and customer service and environmental departments. He also has served as president of other TECO Energy subsidiaries.

Understanding the connection education and the community have with TECO Energy, Ramil has maintained a long-term relationship with USF and other local colleges and universities. In 2001, then-Gov. Jeb Bush appointed Ramil to be a member of the charter board of USF. Prior to becoming chair, he served as vice chair of the board of trustees. Gov. Rick Scott reappointed Ramil to the USF board of trustees in 2011, and he is currently board chair.

In 2012, Ramil joined other business leaders and educational leaders from USF, Hillsborough Community College, St. Petersburg College, Pasco-Hernando Community College, Polk State College and Saint Leo University to develop the Graduate Tampa Bay campaign, an initiative to increase the number of bay area residents earning college degrees. Graduate Tampa Bay aims to increase college completion throughout the bay area. A higher graduation rate means greater success and an improved quality of life for many residents.
